Cook's ultimate goal is to approach the object of analysis free from `unconscious a priori assumptions', and he aims to achieve this by comparing `naturalistic' interpretations with those supposedly made against the grain (p. 133). He suggests that the analytical process should begin with a naturalistic approach to the Instance of Musical Multimedia (hereafter IMM) in toto, to be followed by a systematic consideration of each individual medium in turn, and subsequently each in relation to the other. This process of systematisation is then broken down further. When considering the relationship between a pair of media, one should first invert any apparent prioritisation of one medium over another. A persuasive account of the relationship between music and words in Schumann's `Wenn ich in deiner Augen seh' from Dichterliebe is offered to demonstrate the benefits of this approach, here prioritising the music over the words.
