Minor Oils

Minor Oils This column usually deals with the four major vegetable oils (palm, soybean, rapeseed, and sunflower). However, the USDA also tracks minor oils, including the lauric‐containing coconut and palm kernel, and cottonseed, peanut, and olive. This report will detail the production and export of these oils. Data covering the years 2013/14 to the present are shown in table . For comparison, data for the major oils are included. While production and export of major oils have increased in the past years, the minor oils show little change. The major producers and consumers are given in table . The majority of minor oils are consumed in the country or region of origin. Domestic use consistently averages over 75%, with the remainder exported. Coconut and palm kernel oils account for much of the exports. These lauric oils have unique and useful fatty acid compositions, as shown in table . Both oils have a high level of saturated short chain fatty acids ranging from C8–C14 . As such the lauric oil are well suited for food use (margarine or other spreads, cocoa butter replacement, and ice cream).
