CROSBYb,* Marine Science Station, University of Jordan and Yarmouk University, Aqaba, Jordan b National Science Board, Arlington, VA 22230, USA With the Royal Patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Hussein, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan officially sponsored the Middle East Regional Science Symposium and Workshop: Butterflyfish (Family Chaetodontidae) Research and Monitoring from June 19 to 21, 2002. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) partnered with the Jordanian Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), the University of Jordan, Yarmouk University and the Aqaba Marine Science Station (MSS) to co-host this conference. These institutions of science and marine resource management partnered together to sponsor this Regional Science Symposium and Workshop with the purpose of: (a) developing a scientific consensus on the state of knowledge dealing with butterflyfish in Middle East coral reef ecosystems, (b) sharing experiences and insights between and amongst Middle East scientists, and colleagues from throughout the Indo-Pacific, regarding the use of butterflyfish as indicators of ecological conditions (‘health’) of coral reefs, (c) identifying priorities for future local and regionally based butterflyfish research and monitoring, and http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems Wiley
