MALI: Upsurge in Violence As tense negotiations for peace continue in Algiers, attacks in Bamako and Kidal draw international condemnation. Leader of Algerian Islamist group Al‐Murabitoun , Mokhtar Belmoktar , has claimed responsibility for the March 6th attack in the ‘La Terrasse’ restaurant frequented by expatriates in Bamako, which saw the deaths of five people including a French and Belgian national and a further nine people injured. “We claim responsibility for the latest operation in Bamako carried out by brave combatants from Al‐Murabitoun to avenge our prophet against the unbelieving West which has insulted and mocked him,” a recording, obtained by AFP (7/3), said. His speech alluded to the Charlie Hedbo magazine and killing of Al‐Murabitoun leader Ahmed el‐Tilemsi in northern Mali in December 2014. Two original suspects arrested at the scene were later released; police sources told Radio France Internationale (7/3) that they were “common Malian offenders” and were not involved in the restaurant attack. Malian Special Forces killed one of the suspects, who did not want to surrender, on March 13th in Bamako. The continuing search focused on a number of known extremist groups and individuals including a Russian ‐Malian national, reported AFP (13/3) .
