ISIS Killings: Fighting between the Libyan branch of the Islamic State (ISIS) group and other militias took place across the country in Sirte, an ISIS stronghold, Benghazi and Darnah in the east and around the oil fields. ISIS claimed it had executed two men in the east on October 19th. In a video bearing the logo of Burqa, one of the “states” which the militants claim to control, it said it had executed a South Sudanese Christian, and a Libyan said to be fighting for the country's internationally recognised government. Privately‐owned Libyan daily Al‐Wasat reported on October 17th that ISIS militants had crucified Salafist cleric Muftah Abu‐Sitta al‐Warfali on a roundabout in Sirte. Five people were killed by shelling in Benghazi on October 19th, a local hospital reported. A military source in Benghazi confirmed the incident, which happened in the central area of Laithi, but refused to say who was behind the violence. Seven ISIS jihadists and three soldiers of the recognised government also died in late September clashes in Benghazi, military and medical sources said. On September 30th one of the guards at Al‐Sidrah oil port was killed while repelling an ISIS attack. Four ISIS members were reportedly killed too. (PANA 26/10) The United Nations Support Mission in Libya ( UNSMIL ) said it was a terrorist attack which targeted a peaceful demonstration in Benghazi, killing and injuring many civilians. The statement also said that stability in the eastern city of Benghazi was key to Libya's overall stability and the latest attack stressesd the urgent need to bring peace to the country. “The shelling of the demonstration in Benghazi serves to show once again that the unending violence is claiming more and more lives, particularly in the city where fighting has raged for over a year and has caused unimaginable suffering to its residents, including displacing more than 100,000 people,” said the statement.
