INTRODUCTIONMuling River is located in the eastern part of Heilongjiang Province of Northeast China. It is the largest tributary of the Ussuri River, which is the boundary river between China and Russia, as well as one of China's national vital wetlands. The river flows through the cities of Muling, Jixi, Jidong, Mishan and Hulin. Extending from 43°54′25″N~45°52′11″N and 130°0′41″E~133°26′42″E, the river has a length of 834 km and an area of 18,136 km2. The present study gives the length–weight relationships (LWR) of four species from the Muling River.MATERIALS AND METHODSThe samples were identified as to species in the laboratory according to Meng, Su, and Miao () and Chen et al. (). Total length was measured to the nearest 0.1 cm with a sliding caliper, and weight to the nearest 0.1 g. All scientific names were checked against FishBase. The LWRs were determined by linear regression. Log–log plots within species were done to remove outliers using SPSS 17.0 (SPSS Inc. Ltd., CA, USA). The 95% confidence limits for b (CL95%) were calculated to determine if the hypothetical value of isometry (3) fell between these limits (Froese, ).RESULTSDescriptive statistics and estimated parameters of length–weight relationships for four fish species from Muling River are shown in Table . The r2 values were between .941 and .984, and b values varied from 2.578 to 3.147, indicating that all parameters could be used safely within the indicated length ranges.Descriptive statistics and estimated length–weight relationship parameters for four fish species, Muling River, ChinaSpeciesnLength (cm)r2ParametersaCL95%bCL95%MinMaxabMinMaxMinMaxRhynchocypris czekanowskii (Dybowski, 1869)245.010.6.9840.00753.1470.00520.01072.9683.325Microphysogobio amurensis (Taranetz, 1937)375.113.4.9750.01712.8060.01250.02322.6512.961Lefua costata (Kessler, 1876)246.612.7.9580.00992.5780.00580.01692.3382.817Misgurnus mohoity (Dybowski, 1869)306.714.0.9410.00672.7610.00370.01242.4943.029No LWRs in FishBase; new maximum length records in bold.DISCUSSIONThe LWRs for three species are the first records for FishBase: Microphysogobio amurensis, Lefua costata and Misgurnus mohoity. Two maximum lengths for Rhynchocypris czekanowskii and Lefua costata exceeded the previously reported maximums individually. These LWRs should only be used within the indicated length range until the results are confirmed by other studies. These results contribute to the knowledge of species from Muling River.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSThis study was supported by the Natural Science Foundation of China (No. 4083035).
