John Bongaarts and Dennis Hodgson Fertility Transition in the Developing World Springer, 2022, 150 pp., Open Access

John Bongaarts and Dennis Hodgson Fertility Transition in the Developing World Springer, 2022,... This volume presents the story of the seismic shifts in reproductive behavior in low‐ and middle‐income countries over the past 70 years, including the history, theories, and controversies accompanying them. It begins by outlining an analytical framework with which to understand fertility decline, and then proceeds for several chapters to describe with data how fertility and reproductive behavior have evolved at both the country and individual levels. Throughout the book, particular attention is given to the determinants of fertility decline, be they contraception or family planning programs, or socioeconomic determinants such as education, mortality decline, or economic development. The book also outlines controversies surrounding fertility policies, including a brief recounting of the mid‐century population control movements and fears of the population bomb, before moving to later debates over reproductive rights, family planning policies, and the link between fertility decline and development. It ends by describing developments in fertility behaviors in the twenty‐first century and the challenges that come therewith. As a succinct yet comprehensive overview of fertility transition, this volume is highly accessible, and would be appropriate for both a general audience as well as advanced undergraduate use and higher. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Population and Development Review Wiley
