January–October, 2003 Introduction The aim of these updates is to very briefly review most relevant articles in the field of xenotransplantation that have been published within recent months in journals with international distribution. The reviews will not be comprehensive or exhaustive. This current literature update includes a review of papers published from January to October, 2003. During this period, several general and specialized reviews of xenotransplantation were published [ 1–16 ]. A new era – the α ‐1,3‐galactosyltransferase gene‐knockout pig The birth of the first homozygous α ‐1,3‐galactosyltransferase gene‐knockout (GT‐KO) pigs was reported by PPL Therapeutics and the Pittsburgh team [ 17 ]. Immerge Biotherapeutics has also announced the production of GT‐KO pigs and, in collaboration with the Massachusetts General Hospital group, presented the first in vivo results following the transplantation (Tx) of these pig organs into baboons at the Seventh Congress of the International Xenotransplantation Association in Glasgow in September, 2003 [ 18 ]. The production of heterozygous GT‐KO pigs transgenic for human α ‐1,2‐fucosyltransferase has also been reported, with the aim of producing homozygous Gal‐deficient animals expressing the H antigen [ 19 ].
