Between 4% and 10% of schoolchildren are current asthmatics, and the asthma prevalence is increasing (2). In more than 80% of cases, asthma coincides with other manifestations of atopic disease, notably allergic rhinitis and atopic eczema (dermatitis). Asthma is characterized by variable bronchial obstruction; part of this is due to increased muscular tone and is therefore readily reversible with modern selective bronchodilators (that is, b2-agonists) (3). There is also inflammatory oedema and infiltration of a variety of inflammatory cells together with secondary effects resulting from repair after previous attacks.
