In the first decade of the Twenty‐first century, the world lost nearly one million lives in natural disasters ( IFRC, 2009 ). That the severity of underlying hazards is very likely to increase in the near future indicates a mounting risk for more disasters ( IPCC, 2007 ). This decade could also be marked for a rising consensus among academics for the social construction of disasters across the world ( Wisner ., 2004 ; Birkmann, 2006 ; Gaillard ., 2010 ). Dr Kapur's Vulnerable India provides rigorous evidence to confirm this case in India. The book portrays the grim reality of Indian disasters. It is based on comprehensive research of 16 geophysical hazards in 593 districts over a span of 30 years (1977–2002).
