S. degree in Psychology (cum laude) from the University of Amsterdam in 1980 and a Ph. D. from the Eindhoven University of Technology in 1987. He has been affiliated with IPO since 1982. His research focuses on both fundamental and applied psychophysics/psychometrics, in par- ticular in the field of visual perception. For six years his research on the fundamentals of perceptual image quality metrics was supported by a personal fellowship from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. His current research interests include image quality metrics, the optimization of color reproduction, the subjective evaluation of stereoscopic displays, and human spatio-temporal information processing. IN THIS ISSUE Several common threads run through articles in this issue. One is a sense of history; a second involves developments that relate to Albert H.
