Immigrants and the American dream: remaking the middle class by William A. V. Clark. Guilford... evolution of US and Canadian urban systems. Diversity in rural and non-metropolitan urban settlement is recognised, as consumption-based places proliferate and production-based places decline (Halfacree). Yet the authors of the book, even the rural-oriented, seem caught up in the inevitable metropolitanisation of everyone everywhere, and ignore the possibility of recurrent cycles of anti-urban and non-metropolitan growth, perfectly plausible given advanced technology, multiple residences, and increased metropolitan inequality in developed countries, or lack of opportunities and poor conditions in many developing countries (as in the African example). And, although more attention to internal metropolitan diversity is recommended, it seems almost an afterthought, although half the world’s population will soon reside in cities. New Forms of Urbanization is then a useful compendium and introduction to the controversies and problems of distinguishing urban and rural settlement, especially valuable to those interested in different patterns and practices across the world. Abstract

evolution of US and Canadian urban systems.
