The Australian Journal of Journal of the Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society Book Reviews E3 the definition of agri-food chains, to assess implications for consumer and producer welfare. The European Union, Australia and the USA share similarities in their modern architecture of food retail markets, mainly through supermarkets and discounters capturing consumer information by scanners. It would make sense to take advantage of this technology and use such scanner data in the study of food prices. This is discussed in depth in this volume and constitutes one of its main contributions. However, some stores to not sell their scanner data, which would lead to incomplete data sets. And of course, this new technology would not be suitable to measure food price inflation in developing countries, where the majority of retail food sales are not made in supermarkets.
