In their Focus Review on page 286,Martyn Jevric and Mogens Brøndsted Nielsen discuss the ever-increasing number of ways to produce, extend, and stabilize oligoynes, such as metal-catalyzed and asymmetricapproaches, as well as shielding and maskingstrategies, so that the properties of such compounds can be investigated and innovative uses for them identified. Nitroxides are useful as spin labels because they are stable and easytocovalently incorporate into other molecules. As described by Elisabetta Mezzina, Marco Lucarini et al. in their Focus Review on page 296, the paramagnetic nature of theselabelled compounds can be especially useful for probing the structure and properties of supramolecular structures through electron spin resonance spectroscopy.Examples of how to synthesize labeled compounds as well as the use of this technique for common supramolecular assemblies, such as rotaxanes, cyclodextrins, and cyclophanes,are presented.
