German Historians and the Trivialization of Nazi Criminality: Critical Remarks on the Apologetics... Footnotes 1 The reference here is to the victory of the conservative coalition of the Christian Democratic Union and the Free Democratic Party led by Helmut Kohl over the Social Democratic government of Chancellor Helmut Schmidt in 1981. 2 On Sunday 5 May 1985, President Reagan, during a visit to the Federal Republic, accompanied by Chancellor Helmut Kohl, laid a wreath on the grave of Konrad Adenauer at Rhondorf Cemetery and, following this, they visited the site of the former infamous concentration camp of Bergen‐Belsen near Celle where during the Second World War over 100,000 people perished, including the now famous young Jewish girl Anne Frank. Reagan and Kohl then paid a ten‐minute visit to the soldiers' cemetery at Bitburg where the dead of the Nazi elite Waffen‐SS are also interred. The former Luftwaffe General Johannes Steinhoff and the former US General Matthew Ridgeway laid a wreath there. (See Das Parlament , Bonn, 11/5/85, ‘Chronik der Woche’ 4).
