Gating and Class Relations: the case of a New Delhi “colony”

Gating and Class Relations: the case of a New Delhi “colony” During the 1990s an increasing number of New Delhi's elite neighborhoods erected gates with guards at their entrances. A process, which elsewhere has been termed fortification or gating, is unfolding in the city. In the context of changing class relations in urban India this article explores the gating of one centrally located upscale neighbourhood, or “colony,” called Golf Links in New Delhi. In Golf Links, the elite explains the gating as a result of increased crime and untrustworthy servants. In this article it is argued rather that gating must be understood in terms of complex transformations unfolding in Indian cities. The case of Golf Links provides insight into how these changes affect urban Indian class relations. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png City & Society Wiley

Abstract

During the 1990s an increasing number of New Delhi's elite neighborhoods erected gates with guards at their entrances.
