From the Editor Journal of Heteroatom Chemistry 0 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. new degrees of freedom that it will afford. Some of Professor Quin’s plans for the future will be covered in a Tribute that will appear in the issue dedicated to him. Louis D. Quin was born on March 5, 1928 in Charleston, South Carolina. He received his B.S. from The Citadel in 1947; his M.A. from the University of North Carolina in 1949; and his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina in 1952. He was an industrial research chemist during 1949- 1950, 1952-1954, and 1956. He served in the United States Army Chemical Corps as a First Lieutenant during 1954- 1956. He joined the faculty of the Department of Chemistry at Duke University in 1956 and held successive positions of Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor, Director of Graduate Studies, Chairman (1970- 1976), and James B. Duke Professor. In 1986, he moved to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, as Head of the Department of Chemistry (1986- 1995). He has been a Member of the Board of Editors of PHOSPHORUS, PHOSPHORUS AND SULFUR, and now of PHOSPHORUS SULFUR AND SILICON.
