Abstract
Rapid Urbanization and the expansion of an unstable capitalist economy have transformed gender relationships in Northeast Brazil. Changes in economic opportunity for women and for men, combined with shifts in informal reciprocal relationships modify power relations between the generations and between the genders. Greater freedom for daughters, combined with ongoing changes in concepts of respectability encourage men to attach discourses of passion and romance to marriage and pseudo‐marriage with women considered decent rather than to extra‐marital relationships as in the past, and let young women dream of love that is both exciting and respectable.
