Fifty Years of The Australian Journal of Politics and History

Fifty Years of The Australian Journal of Politics and History I am most grateful to Dr Andrew Bonnell for his kind invitation to furnish a short memoir of the journal I was privileged to edit from 1983 until my early retirement in 1993. I had been associate editor since 1969, a reasonably long commitment. AJPH was a project in the Department of History and Political Science when I was a student there from 1954. It was the realisation of the vision of our Professor Gordon Greenwood (1913-1986), aided and abetted by his colleague R.G. (Bob) Neale. With the appearance of Volume 1, Number 1 in November 1955 Australia’s pioneering historical journal, expressly designed with the international academic community in mind, had been launched. In contrast to what was known as Historical Studies: Australia and New Zealand (changed to Historical Studies in 1967 and to Australian Historical Studies in 1988 ) AJPH has consistently sustained its role as Australia’s leading forum for historical and political debate, both within and outside Australia. Its emphasis has been in the field of contemporary history and politics, but certainly not exclusively. It needs to be recalled that when Gordon Greenwood was first editor of AJPH he was professor of both History and Political http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Australian Journal of Politics and History Wiley

Abstract

I am most grateful to Dr Andrew Bonnell for his kind invitation to furnish a short memoir of the journal I was privileged to edit from 1983 until my early retirement in 1993. It needs to be recalled that when Gordon Greenwood was first editor of AJPH he was professor of both History and Political
