Evolution of Sex Determining Mechanisms displays many signs of its theoretical-biological origin, although i t also includes some experimental data. The book is divided into two parts: ( 1 ) classical sex-determining mechanisms and (2)sex-chromosome evolution. The fact that Part 1 contains fifteen chapters, including three on haplo/diploidy and two on environmental sex determination, compared with a total of three chapters in Part 2, no doubt reflects the author’s scientific background, in which chromosomes play only a minor role. It would be a pity, though, if this bias were to deter cytogeneticists from reading the book.
