Diese fiinfteilige Publikation im Format A4 umfal3t den gr6Bten Teil unserer heutigen Kenntnisse iiber Wasserorganismen als Indikatoren der Saprobitat. Der Autor hat fast 20 000 Zitate aus 127 Publikationen von 1871 . . . 1974 zusammengestellt und fiihrt insgesamt 4181 Arten von Bakterien, Pflanzen und Tieren an. Fur 917 Arten schlagt er eine einheitliche Einstufung in das Saprobien- system vor, die fur die ,,Deutschen Einheitsverfahren zur Wasser-, Abwasser- und Schlamm- untersuchung" genutzt werden soll. Der erste Teil enthalt eine historische Einfiihrung. Als Begriinder der biologischen Wasserunter- suchung wird F. COHN anerkannt, der 1871 das erste System zur biologischen Wassergutebeurtei- lung veroffentlichte.
