EGYPT: Poll – Part Two

EGYPT: Poll – Part Two The electorate shows itself to be apathetic and unenthusiastic. Egyptians cast their ballots on October 27th in a first round run‐off of a parliamentary vote to elect lawmakers who will doubtless firmly back President Abdel Fattah al‐Sisi . Turnout for the first round held in 14 of Egypt's 27 provinces on October 18th was just 26.6%, and there was no sign of any increased enthusiasm among voters in the latest round. On October 30th, the electoral commission announced that turnout in the first round run‐off was just 21.7%, reflecting disinterest in a vote held in the absence of any strong opposition. Several secular parties either boycotted the vote or were badly represented. Only four candidates were elected in the first round, with none of the other individual candidates getting more than 50% of votes. The second round across 13 remaining provinces was held on November 22nd‐23rd with a run‐off, if necessary, to be held on December 1st‐2nd. AFP (22/11) revealed that in Cairo, very few voters were seen trickling in to cast their ballots on November 22nd. Sisi's supporters expect the new 596‐member parliament to rubber‐stamp his decisions, and experts say it will largely work on its own http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Africa Research Bulletin: Political, Social and Cultural Series Wiley
