Effective leadership – my view

Effective leadership – my view Regardless of how one learns and is trained, in my view, the key requirements of leadership are: • Lead and be able to follow: One has to have a clear and consistent vision which requires both knowledge and ambition. Understanding the culture of the service, nature and stage of need in population and their own staff are key. Listen‐to‐follow but have a clear pathway. Is able to tolerate differences, agree to disagree. • Transparent, responsible and accountable to senior management structure, also to lower level management and front line staff. The leader should have enough courage to accept failure, and look at any failure as a learning experience rather than denial. • Flexibility. Listening and making sure the organization creates a safe, protected environment for staff to work, an environment where they can feel protected and have the ability for growth. This will ensure people's loyalty and should make the work environment, although stressful, fun and participatory. All this may take time, but this will ensure the leader will have a nurturing environment for all including the leader him/herself. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Asia-Pacific Psychiatry Wiley

Abstract

Regardless of how one learns and is trained, in my view, the key requirements of leadership are: • Lead and be able to follow: One has to have a clear and consistent vision which requires both knowledge and ambition.
