EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY: New Dawn

EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY: New Dawn Regional integration takes a step forward with the membership of Rwanda and Burundi. Presidents Paul Kagame and Pierre Nkurunziza signed agreements that officially brought Rwanda and Burundi into the East African Community ( EAC ) fold on June 18th. The fifth extra‐ordinary heads of state summit endorsed Rwanda and Burundi's inclusion into the EAC, ending a question of many years by the two countries. Kenya ’s President Mwai Kibaki said: “With a land area of 1.9 m sq.km of Africa's most productive landscapes, continued GDP growth of over $41bn, the East African Community has the potential to be a formidable economic power. EA sovereignty will be fundamental to buttressing and building a political entity with democracy”. The heads of state also agreed to hasten the fast‐tracking of EA's political federation which would see one political head leading the five EAC members by 2013. The summit also endorsed the reconstitution of the East African Court of Justice. The court will now have five judges in each of its two divisions. July 1st is the date for the operationalisation of the new court. The Presidents also agreed to consider and approve the revised emoluments for members of the EA Legislative http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Africa Research Bulletin: Political, Social and Cultural Series Wiley
