Dual‐Function Air Cathode for Metal–Air Batteries with Pulse‐Power Capability

Dual‐Function Air Cathode for Metal–Air Batteries with Pulse‐Power Capability Air‐breathing electrodes comprising carbon nanofoam papers coated with nanoscale manganese oxide (MnOx) exhibit two distinct functionalities – electrocatalysed oxygen reduction plus faradaic pseudocapacitance. Pseudocapacitance provides seconds‐long discharge pulses at current densities that exceed oxygen reduction alone, even providing pulse power for one anaerobic cycle. The MnOx spontaneously recharges between pulses via reaction with oxygen while operating as an air cathode. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Advanced Energy Materials Wiley

Abstract

Air‐breathing electrodes comprising carbon nanofoam papers coated with nanoscale manganese oxide (MnOx) exhibit two distinct functionalities – electrocatalysed oxygen reduction plus faradaic pseudocapacitance. Pseudocapacitance provides seconds‐long discharge pulses at current densities that exceed oxygen reduction alone, even providing pulse power for one anaerobic cycle. The MnOx spontaneously recharges between pulses via reaction with oxygen while operating as an air cathode.
