Does asthma affect school performance in adolescents? Results from the Swedish population‐based birth cohort BAMSE

Does asthma affect school performance in adolescents? Results from the Swedish population‐based... INTRODUCTIONAsthma is common among schoolchildren: Approximately 1 in 10 is affected. Disease severity varies, and multimorbidity (ie, having more than 1 allergic disease) is common. It has been shown that asthma affects quality of life and school attendance, and may thus influence school performance, and, by extension, the educational career. Several studies have been published on the subject. Two reviews7,8 from 2004 to 2005 concluded that there is insufficient evidence to support the hypothesis that asthma affects school performance. A similar conclusion was made by the World Health Organization (WHO) in its review of the impact of health and health behaviors on educational outcomes. However, several more recent studies have shown a negative influence on school performance among students with asthma. To our knowledge, only 1 Swedish study has been published on asthma and school performance, and no significant association between asthma and a lower overall grade was seen in this study. It did, however, show lower overall grades among students with severe nasal symptoms, particularly those using anti‐allergy medication. Our hypothesis is that asthma affects school performance negatively due to poor health and more absence from school.
