CONFERENCE REPORT

CONFERENCE REPORT "The Family System and Health Care Delivery" Toronto (November 6-9th, 1980) was the site of the 38th Annual and 1st Inter national Conference of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Participants were invited from every major Family Therapy association throughout the world; Les Harvey (who is a distinguished affiliate of the A.A.M.F.T.), Bruce Reddrop and Brian Stagoll were the Australian invitees. The A.A.M.F.T. was founded in 1942, and has grown from 800 members in 1970 to over 8,000 current members. Membership of the A.A.M.F.T. is widely recognised as the highest credential available in North America in the field of marriage and family therapy, and the credential appropriate to third party reimbursement in many States. The A.A.M.F.T. has evolved from the marriage guidance/counselling stream rather than from within the mental health profession. Nineteen seventy nine saw the formation of A.F.T.A., the American Family Therapy Association, which has more the mental health roots. Some initial incompatibility between A.F.T.A. and A.A.M.F.T. is now largely resolving with the larger A.A.M.F.T. continuing its major functions as a national body representing interests of marriage and family therapists and monitoring standards, licensing and accreditation, and the smaller (300 member) A.F.T.A. evolving into an academy http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Australian and New Zealand Journal of Family Therapy Wiley
