A fellow and resident, along with the two pilots, were killed instantly on October 19, 2006, when their plane crashed on takeoff from Besancon. They were en route to the northeast city of Amiens to retrieve a liver for transplantation at their institution. ( The risk of death, though fortunately rare, is a potential hazard that members of transplant teams accept, along with such risks as infection with hepatitis viruses. When pig organs can be used routinely, the risks of accidental death during donor retrieval should be obviated, Eds .) Jeff Getty, baboon bone marrow transplant recipient, dies at 49 * Jeff Getty, an AIDS patient and strong research advocate, who in 1995 received an experimental baboon bone marrow transplant, died on October 9, 2006. He died of cardiac arrest following a long battle with HIV and cancer.
