Comoros: Presidential Candidates The Constitutional court of the Comoros (CCC) on May 21 st approved the candidature of five people to contest the presidential election on the autonomous island of Anjouan slated for June 15th. In its ruling made in Moroni, the court declared that Bacari Abdou (MP); Bastoine Soulaimana , a former judge; Mohamed Djaanfari , vice‐president of the National Assembly and Retired Officer of the French Army, Moussa Toybou , an engineer in building and civil engineering and Sondi Abdou Latuf Soilihi qualified to contest. It invalidated the candidacy of Mohamed Bacar , former strong man of Anjouan, who was overthrown by a military coalition on March 25th and is now in exile in Reunion . He was sentenced on May 15th to five years’ imprisonment coupled with five years of forfeiture of civil and political rights “for usurpation of title”. ( PANA 21/5 ) Meanwhile, the head of the African Union ( AU ) Conflict Management Division, Mr El Ghassim Wane, in Moroni on May 18th hailed the political situation in the Comoros, after the overthrow of the self‐proclaimed President of Anjouan, Col. Bacar. “We are happy about the restoration of order in Anjouan and the electoral process under way in the island”, he told PANA . Mr Wane is part of an international mission, which has been in Moroni since May 14th, for the assessment of the political situation in the Comoros. He said the team had met all the parties in the Comoros’ political process, in an effort to determine the areas where the international community could assist the country. The international mission is made up of representatives of the AU, the League of Arab States, the International Francophonie Organisation (OIF), the Indian Ocean and the United Nations.
