COMOROS: Dhoinine Wins Election results come in amid accusations of massive fraud. Al Watwan reported on December 29th that the Minister of State in charge of elections, Abdouroihmane Ben Cheikh Achiraf, had declared the results of the presidential and gubernatorial elections held on December 26th in the Union of the Comoros, after scrutiny by the National Independent Electoral Commission. Out of 384,358 registered voters and 705 polling stations, only 195,867 took part in the election, that is a participation rate of 52.8%, with 13,812 spoilt ballots.. The candidate for the presidential tendency, Ikililou Dhoinine , garnered 61% of the votes (111,279 votes) for the presidency of the Union of the Comoros compared to 33% for Mohamed Said Fazul (59,437 votes), the candidate supported by a section of the national opposition, and 6% for Abdou Djabir (11,339 votes), an independent candidate. Ikililou Dhoinine, a pharmacist by training, who was vice‐president to President Ahmed Abdallah Sambi over the last four years, is now set to become president of the Union for the next five years, after validation of the results by the Constitutional Court, which must take place by January 15th.
