Comoros Elections Postponed: The government and opposition have agreed to hold the Indian Ocean state’s parliamentary elections a week later than initially scheduled. The first round will now take place on December 6th instead of November 29th and the second round on December 20th instead of December 13th. The postponement followed a demand by the opposition over a technicality. (©AFP 30/10 2009) Candidature Rejected: The Constitutional Court of the Comoros on November 12th rejected the candidature of former prime minister, Halidi Abderahmane Ibrahim , because he was unable to produce a copy of his police record in Anjouan, his home island. All other candidates, 44 on Anjouan, 17 on Moheli and 82 on the Great Comoros, were given approval by the Constitutional Court. (PANA, Moroni 12/11) Opposition Leader Arrested: The leader of the opposition Ridja party , Said Larifou , was arrested by police on November 17th in the capital Moroni. Larifou, who holds dual French and Comoran citizenship, was detained two days after openly criticising Ahmed Abdallah Mohamed Sambi , the President of the Comoros Federation, at a political meeting. He will have to stand trial for “insulting the head of state, it was revealed on November 20th. (©AFP, Moroni 17,20/11 2009) More Election Funds : The government has made available another Euros138,220 to CENI on top of the initial (203,265), Ahmed Hassane El Barwane, the Minister o f Economy, said on November 20th. The elections are half financed by partners for development including France , the European Union ( EU) , the African Union ( AU ) and the League of Arab States.
