These experiences complement what we bring to our training in terms of our own values and theoretical leanings, and life experience. Through the eyes of a trainee, he addresses specifically the potential value of a focus on family therapy in psychiatric training, especially training in child and adolescent psychiatry. Rice’s account of a three-year long family therapy reminds me of experiences and dilemmas I encountered as a psychiatrist in training. I suspect there are points of reso- nance with clinicians from other disciplines. The opportunity to work with a family for three years is rare, if not unheard of.
