The second edition of this comprehensive guide to clinical psychology with children and adolescents is valuable reading for professionals at all levels working therapeutically with children and young people. As the title would suggest, the book is of cognitive behavioural orientation but also covers issues pertaining to therapy in general. As well as chapters on specific disorders, it covers in detail broader issues such as engagement and motivation, and ethical and practical issues when working with families. The book is divided into five parts. Part 1 – Developmental Cognitive Theory and Clinical Practice – covers broad developmental and theoretical issues in considerably more detail than the previous edition. The first chapter presents a detailed analysis of the Piagetian and Vygotskyan influences on the development of modern CBT for young children. The initial scepticism concerning the use of CBT with younger children is discussed, but the author presents theoretical and research findings supporting the view that CBT can be applied to much younger children than previously thought.
