Child and Adolescent Psychiatry – A Developmental Approach (4th edition, 2007)

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry – A Developmental Approach (4th edition, 2007) Jeremy Turk , Philip Graham & Frank Verhulst . Oxford University Press . ISBN 9780198526124. Pages : 579 . £34.95 (paperback); £75 (hardback) . Now in its fourth edition, this is an updated, thorough textbook on child and adolescent conditions and relevant clinical and psychiatric issues. This book will become an important reference resource for trainee and qualified child and adolescent professionals. As a psychologist, one can refer to it when seeing clients presenting with various physical, neurodevelopmental or other conditions they may know little about. This book will help any medical or other health professional or trainee, learn more about and become more familiar with the psychosocial, psychological and developmental aspects of many physical, emotional and mental health conditions. The book’s strengths lie in the comprehensiveness of the conditions and issues covered; its evidence‐based focus and emphasis on practical issues; its systematic investigation and presentation of each condition (there are sections on prevalence/epidemiology, clinical features, aetiology, assessment, management and outcome for most disorders or conditions presented); and its developmental and psychosocial perspective on psychiatry. I found the chapter on prevention and treatment and on the structure of services available for children very informative and useful, particularly for trainee mental health professionals. Although clearly updated throughout, some sections are less well referenced than others or in some cases the references are somewhat out of date. In addition, there is at times a sense that the role of mothers (as opposed to fathers or parents in general) may be overemphasized; and occasionally the language used in a few sections of the book is somewhat negative or vague. Overall, however, this is a practical and applied textbook of child and adolescent psychiatry written by experts in the field. Its developmental perspective, broad content and real‐life practical case examples will make it a useful reference book for trainees and professionals in child and adolescent health. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of Applied Research in Intellectual Disabilities Wiley
