BURUNDI: On the Verge of Civil War

BURUNDI: On the Verge of Civil War Concerns mount over the increasing violence as the African Union mulls troop deployment. The African Union's ( AU ) Peace and Security Council, on October 17th, recommended the deployment of troops to Burundi if violence worsened and human rights abuses continued. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights ( OHCHR ) said the situation was rapidly deteriorating. The country has seen an upsurge in violence since President Pierre Nkurunziza , in April, announced he was seeking a third term, a move which catalysed protests; Nkurunziza won the election on July 21st. In a recent incident the body of the Treasurer for the opposition Mouvement pour la solidarité et le développement ( MSD ) party, Charlotte Umugwaneza , was found near the capital Bujumbura. Her husband, Deo Ndikumana was abducted on October 16th and was found dead, reported the East African (19/10) . On October 15th violence erupted in Musaga district of Bujumbrua in which one person died and another was injured, although other sources gave a higher toll, reported RFI . Earlier, on October 13th, 10 people were killed in Bujumbura during a disarmament operation in area believed to be an opposition hotbed.
