The mystery of color perceptions and the problem of ordering colors in a complete and easy to comprehend system have been of interest to a selected group of people over many hundreds of years. They included physicists, naturalists, artists, technical specialists, and others. In many cases, the results of these preoccupations have been books describing the authors' ideas, with color illustrations that range from representations of the ideas in abbreviated form, all the way to full‐fledged color atlases. Up until the 19th century, such illustrations were usually hand‐illuminated. A small group of people have made it one of their life's hobbies to collect such books. The best‐known example in the United States was Faber Birren whose collection now is a treasure of the Yale Arts Library. Another such collection, as yet private, is the one by the Swiss color educator and architectural color consultant Werner Spillmann. Spillmann's collection is the subject of the book under review.
