Book review: Aquatic and Wetland Plants of India, Christopher D.K. Cook. Oxford University Press,... partly as a government cetacean conservationist, I would have welcomed further insights into the sociopolitical pressures and barriers faced in attempting to conserve these intriguing creatures. The book is aimed at undergraduates concerned with nature conservation. It will certainly meet the aim in informing undergraduates of the various pressures faced by cetaceans. However it will not inform them much about the practice of nature conservation in the real world. Maybe someone will write a book which satisfies this need in the future. MARK L. This book is an identification guide to the aquatic and wetland plants of India, written by Professor Cook `as a last fling before going into retirement'. He was encouraged to write it by Indian botanists who found it particularly difficult to identify wetland species using the numerous, but often inadequate, local floras. Most areas of India have a highly seasonal climate, with at least 70% of the annual rainfall falling during the monsoon.
