Book Notes

Book Notes FRANK CROWLEY Book Notes BYRON’S JOURNAL OF HIS CIRCUMNAVIGATION 1764-1766. Edited by Robert E. Gallagher. Cambridge, published for the Hakluyt Society by Cambridge University Press. Second Series No. CXXII, 1964. Pp lxxxii f 230. Eighteen plates and two maps. 40/- stg. This is the first accurate publication of Byron’s Journal. Hawkesworth’s Voyages gives the official account of Byron‘s journey but contains many inaccuracies and deliberate distortions. Some of these changes may be justified on grounds of economy or style; but others cannot. Hawkesworth made very misleading additions to Byron’s anthropological observations of the Patagonians ; he flattered Byron’s character by omitting his written hope that a following French vessel would run ashore in the Strait of Magellan and by subtly changing remarks about ‘these poor savages our friends’; and he intruded his own beliefs about the nature of the world by systematically omitting Byron’s references t o God. I n this volume we are given a bibliography, a learned historical introduction and several appendices of supporting documents. The Journal itself is printed from the manuscript in the possession of the National Maritime Museum and aims t o reproduce it as accurately as typography will allow.
