Many of us got to know Althusius through Bernard Freyd’s translation of Otto Gierke’s work on him (published in English under the somewhat misleading title The Develofiment of Political Theovy in 1939 and presumably bombed out of print a year or two later). Now, fortunately, those who do not read Latin can read what F. S. Carney describes as ‘the basic structure’ of Althusius’s Politics (1603) itself in a ‘first-ever’ English translation which makes good if not by any means always elegant reading out of what is reputedly a more than ordinarily difficult and inelegant original.
