EDITOR’S RECOMMENDATIONS Background to the modifications of guideline RiL 805 for recalculation and assessment of railway bridges in Germany For the recalculation and evaluation of railway bridges, guideline RiL 805, which has been used for around 30 years, has proven itself very well. As part of the cur- rent revision of the guideline carried out by DB Netz AG, a certain adjustment to the European standards is aimed for, in particular with regard to the characteris- tic values, safety factors and combination coefficients. However, the normative re- gulations have to be dealt with very sensi- tively, since a “new building precaution” is neither possible nor necessary for the evaluation of the existing building – on the contrary, this would lead to economi- cally relevant incorrect evaluations of buildings with sufficient reliability.
