Abstract

We, the participants of the Sixth International Conference on the Conservation and Management of Lakes, and Comprising Citizens from many countries throughout the World and from all continents; Acknowledging that water is the basis of all life and that lakes and reservoirs, as an integral component of our planet's life-support systems, are essential for the maintenance of human life and represent resources and assets of enormous economic, cultural, aesthetic and recreational importance; Noting that lakes are subject to many demands, to significant loss of biodiversity, and to increasing degrees of pollution and degradation, and that all such events are accelerating because of rising human pressures; Recognizing that major issues for the management and conservation of lakes include those of regional and global, and of current and future significance; And responding to the advice and comments of participants at the conference, Make the following declarations: dependent human populations. Large-scale water resources projects, both national and international, have become increasingly significant. We propose that such projects should be subjected to environmental impact assessments, monitoring of on-going activities and extensive post-evaluation with details reported at conferences as part of the international learning experience. 1 1 Declaration on Knowledge and Technology Transfer
