CAPALDO Ospedale Civile â Vito Fazzi â, Lecce AND L.L. CAVALLI-SFORZA? Istituto di CTenetica, Universitci, Parma INTRODUCTION The present research is a genetic analysis of the human population living in the Lecce province which is one of the five provinces that form the region of Puglie and is located at the tip of the heel in the Italian peninsula (Fig. 1). The province of Lecce is divided into ninety-four âcomuni â (administrative areas), which in this area correspond approximately to villages. So far, data on the ABO system and on the D antigen on the Rh system (Liaci & Scarano, 1959) are the only available frequencies concerning this particular province. Data on the MN system (Pontecorvo & Muratore, 1951; Introna, 1953; Liaci & Scarano, 1959), on the other antigens of the Rh system (Pontecorvo & Muratore, 1951; Introna, 1953; Liaci & Scarano, 1959) and many more data on the ABO system (Lovaglio, 1929; Pontecorvo & Muratore, 1951; Introna, 1953; Formaggio & Ferutta, 1953; Liaci & Scarano, 1959) refer to the whole region
