The objective of our experiments was to estimate the amino acid requirement of trout between 50 and 2OOg body mass employing dose-response experiments. The first step was to develop a test diet which ideally can be characterisized by: (a) giving comparable performances to practical type diets; (b) using well standardized components; and (c) enabling a specific deficiency for each essential amino acid to be determined. Numerous studies published in the literature did not cover all these salient points. In search of a test diet which may fill the gap, three consecutive trials (A, B and C) were carried out in a recirculation system. Groups of 20 trout each were kept in round plastic tanks (250 1, each treatment 4 replicates; temperature 15.5-17.5 "C; initial body mass 46-55 8). Diets were prepared as moist pellets of about 4 mm diameter and frozen until feeding. Feed was offered twice a day (to satiation to avoid feed losses). Weight gain
