KOHJI OGATA is a graduate of the Kyoto lnstitute of Technology. After being an industrial designer at the Sharp Corporation, he became Assistant Professor at Shukugawa Gakuin Junior College in 1968. There he is now Chief Professor of Design in the Art Department. WILLIAM A. THORNTON, Ph. D., is a frequent author in this journal. Most recently, he has written (in the Summer 1986 issue) on his favorite subject of the human visual system responses; in that issue About the Authors recalls his career and accomplishments. GUNTER DORING, Ph.D., is a member of the section on color technique in the Color Metrics and Optical Properties of Materials Department of the BAM in Germany. His first contribution to this journal was as coauthor with Klaus Witt, head of his section, of an article on color differences in the Fall 1983 issue. COLOR research and application
