About the authors E. 1. STEARNS, Ph.D., is a color consultant. R. E. STEARNS, Ph.D., is Head of the Computer Science Department of the State University of New York at Albany, in Albany, New York. ETHEL HEILA is an artist and teacher. She has studied art at the Rochester Institute of Technology and Cornell University and has a B.Sc. degree from the University of Rochester. She has taught art in public and private schools, most recently at the Tompkins Cortland Community College. Henry W. Levison Henry W. Levison, M . A . , died after a long illness on April 22, 1988, at age 81. Mr. Levison graduated from the University of Cincinnnati. In 1933 he founded the Permanent Pigments Company with the goal of producing artists’ paints that are permanent, properly labeled, and popularly priced. Levison pioneered the formulation and manufacture of acrylic polymer artist’s paints and introduced a line of paints based on the Munsell System. Upon retiring in 1971 he founded Colorlab in Hallandale, Florida, where he developed new pigment evaluation methods. He provided extensive lightfastness testing data for artists’ paints as a background for upgrading the relevant NBS standards. Levison was active in many professional societies, among them the ISCC and the American Artist’s Professional League. In 1982 he received the ISCC Macbeth Award for outstanding achievements in color for the visual arts.
