already been presented in the Editorial of issue number 2 of volume 10 of Heteroatom Chemistry. His research work for the Ph.D. degree, under the direction of Egon Wiberg, dealt with boron compounds, but he chose the domain of other facets of Main Group Chemistry for his own career in academic research. He selected nitrogen compounds as his ï¬rst area of research, but he soon moved to phosphorus chemistry, the ï¬eld in which he has concentrated his efforts since about 1965. Alfred Schmidpeter is much better qualiï¬ed to describe his many seminal contributions to phosphorus chemistry than we are and, in fact, he has done so in an âEssay on Phosphorus Chemistryâ that follows this tribute. When we asked him to review his career in the form of a âchemical autobiographyâ, he accepted the invitation with pleasure because it enabled him to present a uniï¬ed and comprehensive summary of his lifeâs work to the readers of This Journal. We believe that his essay can serve as an inspiration to neophyte chemists and can encourage established chemists to prepare reviews of this type of their own work.
