His research work for the Ph.D. degree, under the direction of Egon Wiberg, dealt with boron compounds, but he chose the domain of other facets of Main Group Chemistry for his own career in academic research. He selected nitrogen compounds as his first area of research, but he soon moved to phosphorus chemistry, the field in which he has concentrated his efforts since about 1965. Alfred Schmidpeter is much better qualified to describe his many seminal contributions to phosphorus chemistry than we are and, in fact, he has done so in an “Essay on Phosphorus Chemistry” that follows this tribute. When we asked him to review his career in the form of a “chemical autobiography”, he accepted the invitation with pleasure because it enabled him to present a unified and comprehensive summary of his life’s work to the readers of This Journal. We believe that his essay can serve as an inspiration to neophyte chemists and can encourage established chemists to prepare reviews of this type of their own work.
