THE TRANSFORMATION OF POISSON, BINOMIAL AND NEGATIVE-BINOMIAL DATABiometrika, 35
BY H. GOLDSTEIN Department of Statistics, University College London An experiment was designed in order to test for differences in the proportions of non-modal and abnormal cells counted, between different observers and between cultures taken a t different times from the same individual. The experiment involved six observers in the M.R.C. Clinical Effects of Radiation Research Unit and three leucocyte cultures from samples taken a t weekly intervals from a 61-year-old woman. Two slides were made from each culture in the usual way in preparation for chromosome analysis. The slides were examined a t the same time, every observer analysing thirty cells on each slide and the slides taken in rotation to eliminate order effects. The design is a 6 x 3 cross-classificationwith one replication (the second slide from the same culture). It was decided to carry out the analysis on the number of A and B type cells containing 45 chromosomes (modal number 46) out of the total number of cells counted on a slide, and also on the number of C-type cells out of the total. One of the slides was found to be too poor to be included in the analysis. A. The results for
