A special issue dedicated to Károly Vékey, the many‐sided mass spectrometrist: From fundamentals... This special issue of Mass Spectrometry Reviews honors Károly Vékey for his outstanding career in mass spectrometry, and his long‐standing service to the Journal.I first met Károly 27 years ago, when I was a university student and I attended his mass spectrometry course. His strong knowledge and insight into mass spectrometry, physical‐ and analytical chemistry was so unique that I immediately decided to join his research group. He was the head of the mass spectrometry department of the Chemical Research Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. So, I joined the group and wrote my MSc diploma work and my PhD thesis under his supervision.Since then we have been working together on many different topics from the theory of mass spectrometry to various practical applications (such as glycoproteomics or analysis of monoclonal antibodies). We were able to work very well together; I put his excellent ideas into an algorithm. As a result, the MassKinetics model and computer program were born.Károly also organized several meetings. He became the co‐organizer of the Informal Meeting on Mass Spectrometry (IMMS) conference series launched by Pietro Traldi.
