Abstract

A NOTE ON THE SUBAQUATIC DEFORMATION IN THE TAIKU DEPOSITS BY KUOTA CRAN (4u) (The Geological Survey of Kwangtung and Kwangai) The late Pif cene freshwater Taiku Deposits developed in the basin behind the great Taiku fault-scarp in central Shansi, have already been thoroughly described stratigraphically as well as tectonically by Dr. However, it seems Barbour' and later by P. Teilhard and Dr. Young2. that the curious figure resulting from subaquatic deformation occurring in these beds did not attract their attention. In this note, the present writer therefore endeavors to discuss this problem briefly according to his own observations. According to the recent study3 the Taiku Series of Dr. Barbour4 is divisible into two formations as effectively marked both by their different altitudes of occurrence and by the distinct erosion surface between them; the underlying tilted freshwater sediments which consist mainly of sandy layers and clay beds besides the coarse breccia at its base, belong to the Taiku formation proper (= "Nihowan" or Villafranchian as indicated by horse and other fossils), while the overlying undisturbed red loam locally with basal gravels is referrable to the "Choukoutien" stage (Lower Pleistocene). The deformational feature with which this note deals appears in
