The retinex theory of Dr. Edwin Land is once again generating considerable interest among colour‐vision scientists. This theory attempts to explain by a few simple laws the phenomenon of colour constancy, i.e., the fact that the perceived hue of objects remains almost constant, despite large changes in the wavelength composition and average intensity of the source illuminating them. Recently the theory was the subject of a symposium and lecture delivered by Dr. Land to the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in Munich. This article summarizes that lecture and symposium and discusses the retinex theory in the context of some recent findings.
